Writing Tip #1: Read Your Copy Out Loud

I realized today that I’ve been plying my trade as a copywriter for over 6 years now. I started small with a small ad agency (as an intern, no less), and have worked my way through the agency and client sides of life so far. And there’s one thing I know for certain: Writing is tough.

So I thought today on my way home from work that maybe I could introduce a small series of copywriting tips for the young writers out there who are unsure of themselves (aren’t we all? And I’m one of them). This way, I could “pay it forward” in a sense all that I’ve learned from other writers as well as through the multitude of my own trials and errors (mostly errors). So here goes:

Tip #1: Read your copy out loud.

Does that part of your paper look funny? Are you not quite sure how it should go? Read it out loud. If it sounds awkward aloud, it’s awkward on paper, too.

Since I will admit that I’m my own worst editor (and harshest critic at the same time), I find that this little tactic is immensely helpful, particularly for the passages that are tough to think of how to edit at first glance.

When in doubt, read it out… loud. It’ll go a long way for you.
